When it comes to decorating, slow and steady wins the race. You can never find what you need when you want it, but you will always find pieces over time when you take your time. I finally completed our family room after about 9 months since day 1 of starting over from scratch. The finishing touch was this gem of a wooden chair I found at Home Goods – I nearly shrieked and jumped up and down when I found it. My fellow Home Goods addicts know what I mean, it’s a high you can’t explain when you find a gem in a sea of meh’s.
The Process
This family room needed some extra TLC. We changed the floors throughout the house, added some fresh paint, ditched the oversized couch (sorry babe), brought in all new furniture and switched out the curtains and curtain rods. Keep scrolling and you’ll find the ‘before’ photos and you’ll see what I mean.
This room was no easy feat. Since we started in December to present day, we have had two different coffee tables, started with one black leather chair and ended up with two, and also lived with a couch for about 5 months that was too small for the space, but Devin tortured me with it to try to teach me some sick lesson on a return policy I don’t agree with (long story). Decorating is trial and error and you have to feel every piece out. We’re both really happy with how this room came out and that makes it all worth it.
I wanted the vibe of our home to be Cali cool, but warm and modern at the same time while still being inviting. That’s not too much to ask for, right?!
To keep things cozy and clean because we have two dogs, I went with a terracotta rug from Wayfair to anchor the space. I knew I wanted a white couch so I wanted to bring in color with the rug. The couch is the Harmony Down-Filled couch from West Elm and I added some pillows from Pottery Barn for some added texture. All credit goes to Dev who found our coffee table at Home Goods and the two black leather chairs are from City Furniture. I switched out the old curtain rods for matte black ones from Amazon and traded the thick silk curtains for some white sheers to keep the space light and airy. Since this is where we spend most of our time, we wanted it to be inviting and functional. A place to lay down and watch Netflix together or chill with the fam.
