DIY Maternity Photos At Home

Dress

Being pregnant during quarantine has definitely made me have to get creative to capture these special moments with my mini. I’m currently 26 weeks pregnant (6.5 months) + was planning on having my maternity shoot professionally done when I was 28 weeks pregnant. With the current climate, I will have to push my photos back so I wanted to take some at home now before I get really big.

The beauty of being quarantined with my husband is that he can’t hide -ha! I told him I wanted to have a mini photoshoot to capture my bump + to hear me out. We have an empty wall in our mini’s nursery with a window that brings in a decent amount of light, for me that was enough to make something work + gave me a moment to be creative. Here are some tips on how you can take your maternity photos at home yourself or with your partner.

What You Need To DIY At Home

  • Natural daylight always photographs best so shoot by a window if shooting indoors.
  • White backdrop – if you don’t have a white wall, hang up a white bed sheet with tape (I used painters tape we had around the house)
  • Windows – if you don’t want a solid backdrop you can also shoot by a window. To get light on your face, turn your face looking out of the window. For a silhouette / moody shot stand in front of the window so you are backlit.
  • Pinterest is your best friend. Create a board of your favorite maternity photos for inspiration for posing ideas / lighting / crops + angles to show your significant other for reference
  • A willing husband who can take direction well
  • We used our Sony a5100 camera, but iPhones are so good these days you can take great pics on your phone + use some editing apps to spruce them up like VSCO, Lightroom or Snapseed.
  • If you’re using your iPhone take advantage of your self-timer.
  • If you need extra light – use a ring light. I had one already + used it for these photos. I bought mine off of Amazon.
  • If you happen to have a fan or an air purifier lying around turn that baby on for some hair wind or dress movement

Most of all have fun. Don’t let this pandemic strip the joy out of your pregnancy + the beautiful moments of your body growing a human. Document it as much as you can. Don’t give up or be discouraged if you can’t have photos professionally done. I hope these tips + inspo pics give you some guidance + confidence to do it yourself at home.
