Home Improvement at Casa McKinney: Tips on Choosing The Perfect Shade of White Paint

Happy New Year everyone!!! Devin and I are starting 2019 off with some home improvements at Casa McKinney. First things first is fresh paint. When we first moved into to our house about a year and a half ago, I had it painted grey. After living in the space, I noticed we don’t get a ton of sunlight downstairs, so the grey felt pretty dark. We decided if we were ever going to paint, it had to be before we updated our floors to prevent any spills etc.

We decided to go with white all over the house to make the space feel brighter and cleaner. I love white because it’s fresh, clean, and bright. I also think furniture in general looks better against a white wall because it stands out. The painting process definitely isn’t easy- the prepping is honestly the most time consuming part. But, I’m so happy we decided to paint because the house already feels SO much better!

Here are some process photos of where we are at now and the white vs. grey.

Tips For Choosing White Paint

If you’re thinking about painting your interior white – do it! There are a ton of different shades of white so it can be overwhelming looking at different swatches of white and trying to figure out what makes them different. Here are some tips / facts you should know before picking your perfect shade of white paint.

  • There are different undertones to white- creamy, greige, warm, neutral, yellow, blue etc.
  • White is super reflective. Colors from outside your windows will reflect on your walls, your furniture color will reflect on your walls, and depending on the exposure of where your home sits, the color can be warmer or cooler.
  • We bought our paint at Sherwin Williams after discussing what we wanted and our factors: bright, pure white, we don’t get a lot of light, etc. we were recommended FLAT EXTRA WHITE with paint and primer all in one. It’s a bright white and from what I can tell, has no undertones.
  • If your ceilings are a different shade of white (they most likely are) paint it the same white for a cohesive look.
  • You can do your trim and baseboards a different shade of white, preferably with a gloss for contrast.

I hope you found this post to be helpful if you are planning on doing any home renovations or updating your home. I know when I am going to make any major decisions, I do as much research as I can so I go in educated.

xx Raquel
